According to the Puls Biznesu daily, the new card is a joint project by the country’s Interior, Digital Affairs and Health Ministries.

When introduced, the new chip ID cards would enable Poles to confirm their identity online, including in dealings with the public administration as well as the healthcare service and the banking system, the daily said.

Deputy Interior Minister Tomasz Zdzikot was quoted by the paper as saying that the new ID card would also "allow for more common use of modern digital solutions" among Poles.

The government plans to introduce the new ID card in the first quarter of 2019, but the exchange process could take up to 10 years, Puls Biznesu reported.
