The Polish Baltic city of Gdańsk is in fifth place in the latest Top Destinations on the Rise global ranking compiled by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site.

The list is topped by Ishigaki in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture, Kapaa in Hawaii, Nairobi in Kenya, and Halifax in Canada.

Gdańsk, in northern Poland, is the highest-placed European city in the list.

The Polish city’s Old Town district, its Museum of World War II and St. Mary’s Church are listed among must-see attractions by TripAdvisor, which provides hotel and restaurant reviews, accommodation bookings and interactive travel forums.

Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz has welcomed the news of the city’s high position in the international ranking. “We are sparing no effort to expand our range of tourist services and promote the city worldwide,” he said, recalling that Gdańsk last year came third in the European Best Destination league table, after Portugal’s Porto and Italy’s Milan.
