Polish woman conductor gets international award

Joanna Ślusarczyk of Poland has won Third Prize at the European Union Competition for Orchestra Conductors in Sofia.

It was entered by 75 people shortlisted from 250 applicants.

Ślusarczyk was one of three women in the competition and the only woman in the finals.

The top two prizes went to Cheng Henry Hao-An from Taiwan and Gil de Tejada Daniel from Spain.

Ślusarczyk is a graduate of the Music Academy in Katowice. She has conducted many orchestras in Poland and beyond, including Russia, the United States, Israel, the UK, Norway and Bulgaria.

Her other passion is jazz. She is a prizewinner of a national competition for jazz vocalists in Zamość. (mk/vb)
