One in five smog masks tested in Poland fail to protect users against pollution particles, the country's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has reported.

The organisation probed ten half-mask models, inspecting 12 random entrepreneurs, chiefly wholesalers and retailers. Five products were called into question. Seven were of Polish manufacture, the others were produced in countries such as the United States, Italy and China.

Two models failed to prevent leakage of toxic particles.

Experts from the Central Institute for Labour Protection, where the tests were carried out, said that consumers had no way of knowing whether the purchased product met official requirements.

“Half-masks that are penetrated by paraffin oil mist [which is equivalent to the size of pollutant particles] pose a threat to life and health,” the experts said.

The other three of the rejected items were given the red light due to formal issues, such as shortcomings in instruction manuals.
