Polish president at concert marking Chopin’s debut

Polish President Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata will on Saturday attend a concert marking 200 years since famous composer Fryderyk Chopin gave his first public performance at the tender age of eight.

The concert takes place at the presidential palace in Warsaw. In 1818 at the same venue, then known as the Radziwiłł Palace, the young Chopin performed the Piano Concerto in E minor by the Bohemian composer Adalbert Gyrowetz.
Pianists in Saturday's concert will perform a selection of works by Chopin, Beethoven, Schubert, Gyrowetz and Polish composers Franciszek Lessel and Karol Kurpiński. They will play on a historic piano, an Erard from 1858.
The concert will be broadcast online at www.prezydent.pl and by state broadcaster Polish Radio at www.polskieradio.pl/8,Dwojka.
The event starts at 7pm.
Chopin is Poland’s most famous pianist and composer. He was born in Żelazowa Wola, west of Warsaw in 1810 and died in Paris in 1849.
An anecdote has it that, having returned home from his first public concert, 200 years ago to the day, Chopin is said to have described to his mother how everybody had admired his... new collar.
