Fewer road deaths, but Poland still dangerous

The number of people who died in road accidents in Poland fell 6% last year compared to 2016, the European Commission said on Tuesday.

But Poland is still fourth from bottom in the European Union in terms of road safety. Polish roads claimed the lives of 75 people per million inhabitants last year.
Only three countries had a bigger death toll per million inhabitants: Romania (98), Bulgaria (96) and Croatia (80).
In total, 25,300 people died on roads in EU countries last year, 2% fewer than in 2016.
The EU average of 49 deaths per million citizens was the lowest in history, and it was also the lowest figure in the world, EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc told a press conference in Brussels.
