Sixty-one people have been killed and 954 hurt in 746 road accidents nationwide since Poles hit the road in droves at the end of last month for an extended break from work.

The number of accidents was up by more than 10 percent on the long May weekend last year, and there were also more deaths and injuries, according to Robert Opas from the country’s General Police Headquarters.

Meanwhile, police have stopped more than 3,200 drunk drivers since Friday, April 27, Opas told public broadcaster TVP Info on Sunday.

Compared with the same period last year, 250 more drivers have been stopped driving under the influence, Opas said.

Police have stepped up checks and appealed to drivers to keep their speed down as major roads were expected to clog up with vehicles on the last day of the extended May break.

With May 1 (Labour Day) and May 3 (Constitution Day) public holidays, many Polish families decided to take the entire week off, encouraged by fine weather.
