Warsaw hosts conference on rebuilding world heritage

An international conference on the reconstruction of world heritage sites damaged in conflicts and catastrophes is underway at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

The meeting, entitled The challenges of World Heritage recovery, lasts until Tuesday,
Polish Deputy Culture Minister Magdalena Gawin said the reconstruction of the Old Town in Warsaw after the devastation caused by World War II set an international precedent.
“Polish experience and achievements in this field over the years had a great impact on shaping views about the protection of world heritage,” she added.
Gawin reminded conference participants that the Polish capital witnessed the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943, in which Jewish fighters took up arms against Poland’s Nazi German invaders, and the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.
“The Germans, in retaliation for the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, completely destroyed Warsaw. But this event did not destroy the spirit of the Polish nation," Gawin said.
