Dr. Mirosław Mastej from the International Society of Hypertension told reporters in Warsaw ahead of World Hypertension Day on Thursday that high blood pressure contributes to 27.4 percent of deaths.

Meanwhile, an unhealthy diet contributes to 24.8 percent, high cholesterol to 15.1 percent, obesity to 7.8 percent and smoking to 6.1 percent.

Around 1.2 billion people around the world suffer from hypertension, twice as many as in 1975, according to scientists.
