Polish town bids farewell to its oldest citizen

A southern Polish town has bid farewell to a 107-year-old Catholic nun who was its oldest resident.

Sister Dominika, a member of the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was on Wednesday laid to rest at the Chapel of the White Convent in the town of Nowy Sącz.
Last autumn she celebrated her 107th birthday.
Born in 1910 in Warsaw, she lived in Nowy Sącz for several decades, serving for many years as the principal of a local culinary school, where she taught both religious and vocational classes.
She practiced skating in her youth and until late in life she was keen on sports and outdoor activities. At 79 she climbed the summit of Giewont in Poland’s Tatra mountains (1,894 metres) and at 92 she walked up Gubałówka (1,126 metres).
When asked about her recipe for longevity last year, Sister Dominika had one piece of advice: “Be close to God.”
