The concert was the first in a series of events to be held in Kraków this year to mark Penderecki’s 85th birthday, which falls on November 23.

Addressing a press conference, Penderecki said: “When I was a student and then a young composer at the forefront of the avant-garde, I didn’t think my music would ever be used as film soundtracks. Initially, I didn’t want it to be because I thought of myself as a ‘serious’ composer.”

In 1964 Penderecki wrote music for the acclaimed feature film “The Saragossa Manuscript”, directed by Wojciech Has. Excerpts from his compositions have been used in many films by Polish and foreign directors.

Born in Dębica, southern Poland, Penderecki has forged close bonds with Kraków throughout his career. He studied there, lived there for many years and served as rector of the city’s Music Academy.

Other guests of the Film Music Festival include Oscar-winning composers Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (for “Finding Neverland”) and Elliot Goldenthal (for “Frida”). The event runs until June 5. (mk/pk)
