The car is a Ford Escort 1100GL sedan. Manufactured in 1976, it is said to be in a remarkably good condition. It was first sold to support Vatican charities in the mid-1990s and has been in storage since.

Poland’s Catholic Information Agency quoted a statement by the Sotheby’s Group as describing the car as “a rare collecting opportunity” which is expected to fetch between USD 150,000 and USD 300,000.

The auction is to be held at the Auburn Auction Park in northeastern Indiana in the United States from August 31 to September 2.

Cardinal Wojtyła was elected pope in 1978. He died in 2005 and was declared a saint in 2014.
