On display are almost 300 oil paintings, watercolours, and drawings. Most of them come from Polish collections; some have been loaned from museums in Germany and several other countries.

Born in 1841, Brandt studied in Warsaw, Paris and Munich, and it was in Munich that he lived and worked for many years, becoming a leading representative of the so-called Munich School in Polish painting. He was particularly renowned for his paintings of battles and genre scenes.

The exhibition in Warsaw also features items from Brandt’s collection of historical memorabilia, costumes, arms and musical instruments which he donated to the Polish nation.

The exhibition is one of the highlights of the National Museum’s programme to mark the centenary of Poland’s regained independence. It is open until September 30.

Earlier this year, the National Museum staged an exhibition documenting the artistic and political career of the legendary pianist, composer and statesman Ignacy Paderewski, one of the architects of Polish independence, regained after World War I.
