The number of foreign adoptions out of Poland dropped by half last year, according to the PAP news agency citing the findings of the ministry of family, labour and social policy.

A total of 286 such adoptions were carried out in the country in 2016, dropping to 137 in 2017.

Italy accounted for a majority of foreign adoptions, with 92 children leaving for the country in 2017. A year earlier the ministry recorded 179 such adoptions, PAP said.

In 2017, there were 47 children adopted by US parents; in 2016 the total reached 89, the news agency reported.

The ministry said the decline in the number of adoptions of Polish children by foreign nationals was the result of a decision taken by the conservative Law and Justice government in early 2017 to reduce adoptions out of Poland.

The ministry said: “the decision… stemmed from a deep conviction that finding a proper, stable environment for many children qualified for adoption was possible in Poland.”
