Polish literary award goes to British translator

Antonia Lloyd-Jones, a prominent British translator of Polish literature, has won the 2018 Transatlantyk Prize, which is given out for outstanding achievements in promoting works by Polish writers.

Lloyd-Jones is considered to be one of the finest translators of Polish literature into English. A graduate of Slavonic studies at Oxford University, she has translated more than 30 books by Polish fiction writers and poets, such as Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Olga Tokarczuk, Julian Tuwim and Janusz Korczak.
Lloyd-Jones has told Poland’s PAP news agency that she is constantly working to improve her command of Polish. “I will be learning Polish till the end of my life,” she said.
Last year, the Transatlantyk Award went to Lajos Palfavi, a prominent Hungarian author of studies on Polish literature, and the 2016 award went to Bill Johnston, a professor of literature at Indiana University Bloomington in the United States, who has translated works by Polish authors including Juliusz Słowacki, Tadeusz Różewicz, Bolesław Prus, Stefan Żeromski and Witold Gombrowicz.
