The piece is made up of five parts dedicated to key events and figures in Polish history: the tragic workers’ riots on the Baltic coast in 1970, the death of the Polish clergyman Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in 1981, the canonization in 1982 of ‘Auschwitz Saint’ Maksymilian Kolbe, the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, and the Katyń massacre of Polish officers in Soviet Russia in 1940.

The programme of the festival, which runs until July 22, includes 11 concerts.

It aims to present a cross-section of Polish music to mark the 2018 centenary of the country’s regained independence.

The event will also feature work by other Polish composers, including Chopin, Szymanowski, Wieniawski, Lutosławski and Kilar.

Pieces by foreign composers’, such as Tchaikovsky and Wagner, will also be performed at the festival and serve as a backdrop to the Polish music.

The Polish Music Festival in Kraków was launched in 2005. It’s previous editions have attracted the London Sinfonietta, the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Kronos Quartet, Nigel Kennedy, Ivo Pogorelich and many other high-calibre ensembles and soloists. (mk/vb)
