US musicologist gets Polish award

Lisa Jakelski of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, has received the 2018 Honorary Award of the Polish Composers’ Union for her promotion of Polish music.

Her latest study, “Making New Music in Cold-War Poland”, helped popularise knowledge about the sources of modern Polish music.

Jakelski is to collect the award during the 61st Warsaw Autumn Festival in September.

Jakelski has a PhD in music history and literature from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on the intersection of music making and social and political practices.

Together with British musicologist Nicholas Reyland she co-edited of a collection of essays entitled “Lutosławski’s Worlds”, published by Boydell Press this year.

Her article “Pushing Boundaries: Mobility at the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music” received the Aquila Polonica Article Prize in 2015.

She has received grants from the American Musicological Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities. (mk/vb)
