According to Bishop Tadeusz Bronakowski, Poles drink too much alcohol, too often.

He wants Poles to quit drinking from August 1 until November 11, which will mark Poland’s centenary of independence, calling the initiative “a test of freedom and love for your country”.

The Church has long considered August, which sees many pilgrimages and important Catholic feast days, a month of sobriety.

A government body tackling alcoholism says that 800,000 Poles are addicted to alcohol, while three million binge-drink regularly.
