The museum, which is home to many priceless antique books, put up for sale literature that was mainly printed in Poland and taken to the US by migrants.

They included decades-old titles by some of Poland most venerated poets.

Małgorzata Kot, the museum's director said that Poles do not like to let go of books. But when when they must, they should go to people who will love them.

The institution, a non profit funded by donors, is the Polish diaspora's answer to a national museum.

Its library's oldest book dates back to 1508.
