Ninety-seven percent of respondents said they saw the Polish-born pontiff in a positive light, according to the survey by pollster CBOS. The figure was the same as in a survey ten years ago.

John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyła in the southern Polish town of Wadowice in 1920, served as the leader of the world’s Roman Catholics from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005.

He was declared a saint in 2014.

John Paul II, the third longest-serving pontiff in history, was a strong supporter of Poland's anti-communist Solidarity movement. He is recognised as helping to end communist rule in Poland.
