Polish students' Mars lander in NASA contest

A Mars lander designed by students from the Technical University in Wrocław, south-western Poland, has made the final round of a competition by NASA and the Mars Society.

Named Eagle, the lander can carry up to ten tonnes and is also able to transport people.
It has made it to the top five of 15 submitted projects for the Mars Society’s Red Eagle competition.
The students who worked on the Eagle came from various faculties, including mechanics, electronics, engineering and physics.
They also had the support of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the European Space Agency and the Polish arm of the Mars Society.
The competition’s winner will be announced at the end of the month during an international Mars Society convention.
The winners will receive a prize of USD 10,000 (PLN 37,000; EUR 8,600). (vb/pk)
