More Poles returned to Poland than emigrated last year, Senate Speaker Stanisław Karczewski said, as the fifth world jamboree of Polish expats and people of Polish origin started in Warsaw on Thursday.

According to Karczewski, 2017 was the first year in history to see more people repatriating than leaving Poland.

He added that the country’s ruling conservatives wanted to stop emigration “and that has happened.”

“Poles are interested in Poland, they see and appreciate changes, they see and appreciate that Poland is developing,” Karczewski told Polish Radio.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Polish expats and foreigners of Polish descent have descended on Warsaw for a jamboree to celebrate their homeland.

The visitors are expected to meet Polish President Andrzej Duda on Thursday and take part in an Independence Gala, marking this year’s centenary of regained independence.

On November 11, Poland will celebrate 100 years of independence following more than 120 years of partitions and foreign rule. (vb)
