Pawlikowski's film Ida won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hand out the Oscar awards on February 24.

Cold War “captivates with its masterly film-making, superb acting and unique use of Polish folk music motifs," the Polish Oscar Commission said.

Cold War is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The cast includes leading Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.

Cold War won the top Golden Lions award at the 43rd Polish Film Festival, which ended in the coastal city of Gdynia on Saturday.

The film won Pawlikowski best director award at the Cannes Festival in May. It hit Polish cinemas in June and is due to go on general release in the United States in December.

Pawlikowski was born in Warsaw in 1957. Having left Poland at the age of 14, he first lived in Germany and Italy before moving to Britain.

He studied literature and philosophy. In the mid-1980s he took up filmmaking, initially focusing on documentaries and then moving on to feature films.
