A conservative contender for mayor of Kraków on Sunday said that, if elected, she would build a metro and step up efforts to fight smog in the historic southern Polish city, which is notorious for its pollution.

Speaking at a regional convention ahead of upcoming local government elections, Małgorzata Wassermann said her plan to wipe out smog in the city was based on measures including subsidies for the replacement of old heating systems.

Wassermann also said she would institute measures to increase the thermal efficiency of buildings and create incentives to encourage eco-friendly construction projects.

There is no time to lose because air pollution levels in Kraków are too high for more than 130 days a year, Wassermann told the gathering.

Nor can the city “afford anymore to be missing a subway” because it is choking with traffic, Wassermann said in a speech that was met with loud applause.

Wassermann, a lawyer and MP who heads a special parliamentary commission probing a notorious pyramid scheme, received solid support from Poland’s conservative leader Jarosław Kaczyński and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, both of whom praised her qualifications for mayor of Poland’s second-largest city and the country’s historic capital.

Poland’s ruling conservatives and a host of other parties this weekend intensified their campaigns on the homestretch to election day next Sunday.

Fourteen contenders for mayor of Warsaw on Friday locked horns in a televised debate as the race for the office revved up over the weekend.
