The Polish Diabetes Association issued the warning ahead of World Diabetes Day on November 14.

According to the group’s president, Anna Śliwińska, diabetes is still a taboo topic in Poland.

Meanwhile, those in whom the disease has been diagnosed do not always follow doctors’ advice, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The number of people with diabetes around the globe rose from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2016, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million deaths worldwide, the WHO said.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces
