The jury of the competition said: “The cuts … are meaningful and emotional, almost like poetry.”

“This poetic way of editing supports and enhances the sensuality of the story. The editor sensitively leads the heroes through time, emphasizing their isolation from each other in space, the fragmentarity of their relationship and the impossibility of being together,” the jury added.

Pawlikowski's Cold War has received a total of five nominations for the European Film Awards.

The production follows the love story of two musicians. Their tempestuous relationship unfolds against the backdrop of the Cold War era on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The film stars Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.

The European Film Awards ceremony will be held in Seville, Spain, on December 15.
