US historian among winners of ‘Polish Nobel Prizes’

American historian Timothy Snyder and three Polish scientists won awards hailed as the “Polish Nobel Prizes” from a foundation in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The awards, presented by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), went to Snyder, a professor of history at Yale University with a special interest in Eastern Europe, and Poland’s Andrzej Dziembowski, Andrzej Gałęski and Krzysztof Pachucki in recognition of their outstanding achievements and scientific discoveries.
Each of the four winners received prize money of PLN 200,000 (EUR 47,000, USD 53,000), Poland's PAP news agency reported.
During the awards ceremony at Warsaw’s Royal Castle, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Science and Higher Education Minister Jarosław Gowin said the winners were role models of excellence.
The annual Foundation for Polish Science Awards, now in their 27th year, are handed out in four areas: life and earth sciences, chemical and material sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, and humanities and social sciences, the PAP news agency reported.
