Officials handed out over 500 warnings this weekend to visitors who stepped out onto thin ice covering Morskie Oko lake, one of Poland’s most popular tourist destinations.

Park rangers spent the whole weekend trying to stop crowds from dicing with death on the lake in southern Poland’s Tatra National Park, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

"Tourists risked their lives to take a picture of themselves. There were also people with small children walking out onto the ice,” said Edward Wlazło, head of the park rangers.

He added: “The ice is just over 6 centimetres thick, which is very little."

Tourists at Morskie Oko this weekend included visitors from Hungary, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Ukraine, according to IAR.

Many of them told officials they did not understand Polish. But those stepping out onto the lake included Poles, IAR reported.
