Szczypińska was deputy head of the parliamentary caucus of the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party and a long-time lawmaker.

During her funeral, President Andrzej Duda praised Szczypińska “for all she did for the Solidarity trade union, and for her 15 years in the Sejm,” the lower chamber of Polish parliament.

Jarosław Kaczyński, head of the Law and Justice party, said that Szczypińska, who died on December 8 at the age of 61, “was an exceptionally good person.”

A nurse by profession, Szczypińska was among the driving forces behind the Solidarity trade union in the healthcare sector in her hometown of Słupsk, northern Poland, during the country’s communist era.
