The building of the Department of Radio and Television of the Silesian University in Katowice, southern Poland, is among 40 buildings from 17 countries shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

Named after Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a German-American who was at the vanguard of 20th-century modernist architecture, the prize is awarded biannually to the finest example of European architecture completed in the last two years.

The new facility of the Department of Radio and Television was designed by the Warsaw-based Studio Grupa 5 Architekci, the BAAS Arquitectura firm from Barcelona and the local Małeccy Studio Projektowe.

Five finalists will be announced on February 13, and the award ceremony will take place on May 7 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.

In 2015, the Mies van der Rohe Award went to the Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin, north-western Poland.
