‘Cold War’ triumphs at Poland’s Eagles film awards

Paweł Pawlikowski has scooped up the prize for best director while his feature "Cold War" has been named best film at Poland’s prestigious Orły (Eagles) awards.

The awards for 2019 were handed out by the Polish Film Academy at a ceremony in Warsaw on Monday evening.

Joanna Kulig, who has won acclaim for her role in Cold War, came away with the award for best leading actress.

Pawlikowski’s film also won the prizes for best screenplay, editing and cinematography.

Cold War is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The film has been showered with prizes in recent months, including the European Film Awards in five categories.

It was one of nine movies in the running for an Oscar for best foreign-language film but failed to win.

Meanwhile, director Krzysztof Zanussi won a lifetime achievement award at Monday’s Eagles ceremony in Warsaw.
