The bells of all Polish cathedrals tolled on Wednesday evening at the exact time a blaze struck the 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris two days earlier.

The tribute was a mark of spiritual bond and solidarity with the French people and the Roman Catholic Church in France.

Among the ringing bells was the 16th-century Royal Sigismund Bell at the Wawel Cathedral in the historic city of Kraków. One of Poland’s national symbols, it tolls only on special occasions, mostly religious and national holidays.

On Monday night the world watched as a massive fire ravaged the historic cathedral in the heart of Paris, one of the symbols of the French capital.

Poland’s prime minister has declared that his country is ready to help rebuild the centuries-old edifice.
