Suicide rate skyrockets among minors in Poland: police stats

A total of 160 Polish schoolchildren took their lives in 2018, six times as many as five years earlier, a daily has reported.

The figure was three times higher than in 2016, the Dziennik daily said citing police statistics.
Michał Gaweł, from Poland's General Police Headquarters, said: “The total number of children aged between 7 and 18 who attempted suicide ... increased from 357 in 2013 to 772 in 2018.”
While in the past suicide attempts among young Poles were sporadic, nowadays not a day goes by when the police do not register such a case, the paper said, adding that the actual scale of the problem may be even greater.
Lucyna Kicińska, coordinator of a children's and youth helpline at the We Give Children Strength Foundation, said: “There are more children who try to take their own lives.” She added that “only extreme cases are recorded in official statistics."
