Roman Polanski made a surprise appearance in Poland, Monday, when he attended the funeral of Janusz Morgenstern, the film director and producer who died at the beginning of last week.

Polanski - whose movements between countries carry the risk of extradition to the US in connection with 1970s charges that he had sex with a minor - was clearly moved to take part in the ceremony at Warsaw’s Powazki Cemetery.

“For me [Janusz Morgenstern] was not a representative of Polish cinema. He is simply a dear friend. And all I want to say is – goodbye friend,” Polanski said this morning.

Roman Polanski and Janusz Morgenstern have been close friends since the 1950s.

Polanski appeared as an actor in Morgenstern’s debut feature ‘Do widzenia, do jutra’ (See You, Tomorrow). Polanski’s arrival to Warsaw came as a total surprise to the Polish film world. His last visit was in 2008.

Earlier this year, he was to attend the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia but eventually changed his plans as he was busy putting the finishing touches to his latest feature Carnage. (mk/pg)
