Prosecutors in Opole, southern Poland, have rejected a case filed against a Polish rapper whose lyrics included references to 'killing the president' as it could be seen as “a form of artistic expression.”

Prosecutors also say rapper 'Hujek' was making “a critical assessment of the socio-economic conditions in Poland at the time.”

The initial complaint was filed by Ryszard Nowak, chairman of the privately initiative Nationwide Defence Committee against Sects.

In 2007, rapper Bartek Huk, aka Hujek, released a song entitled “Mr President” on the internet.

Nowak pinpointed the chorus as the incriminating evidence against the rapper, “Hey, Mr President, one day I'll kill him,” the refrain begins.

“Because Mr President, everything is wrong in this country. He's the head of state, so he's responsible for everything. So watch your back Mr President,” continues the rapper.

Lidia Sieradzka, spokesperson for the prosecutor's office, commented that the song should be classed as “a critical assessment of the socio-economic conditions in Poland at the time,” and was not an incitement to kill Lech Kaczynski, the then president.

The prosecutor's assessment that the lyrics are a form of “artistic expression” directly echoes the ruling in an earlier case filed by Nowak, concerning death metal star Adam Darski (aka Nergal of band Behemoth) who tore up a bible on stage.

The latter case contributed to a public outcry that was led by the Church last month, when the “satanic” rock star was hired to take part in a talent-finding show on public television network TVP. Darski's cooperation with TVP was broken off this week. (nh/pg)
