German conductor takes over Polish Radio Orchestra baton

German conductor Alexander Liebreich is to be appointed a new Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

He is to sign a four-year contract, taking up his duties on 1 September.

Born in Regensburg in 1968, Liebreich studied in Munich and at the Mozarteum Academy in Salzburg.

He has worked with the Katowice ensemble on numerous ocassions and has performed with many leading European orchestras, including the BBC Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, and the radio orchestras in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Munich. (mk)
