Specialists from the National Museum in Warsaw have begun their examination of a painting thought to have been looted by the Nazis in WW II but discovered in auction in Hamburg last month.

''

A Jewish woman selling oranges by Alexander Gierymski disappeared from the National Museum in Warsaw in 1944, as the Nazis retreated from the Polish capital.

One of the best examples of the art of Alexander Gierymski, it had been in the collection of the National Museum since 1928.

The painting was put up for auction in Buxtehude at the close of November with the starting price of 4400 euros but was subsequently withdrawn from sale after art historians suspected it might be the highly acclaimed work by Gierymski.

If the painting is confirmed to be A Jewess selling oranges then the Polish state will demand that it be returned to the national collection. (ek)
