The Finance Ministry complex of buildings in the centre of Warsaw has been declared a listed monument of architecture.
Built in 1953-58 according to a design by Stanisław Bieńkuński and Stanisław Rychłowskiego, it is one of the first examples of architecture from that period, a blend of socialist realism with modernism of the 1930s, art déco style and elements of Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics.
According to a spokesperson for the Mazovian Province Art Conservator, the Finance Ministry is renowned not only for its stylish façade but also an extremely interesting interior design. Most of the furniture, chandeliers and metalwork has been preserved in its original form. The entire décor is of the highest artistic merit.
The Finance Ministry is yet another building in the style of socialist realism which have been given listed status in recent years. They include the former headquarters of the Polish United Workers Party, the Palace of Culture, the Parliament, Plac Konstytucji (Constitution Square) and two cinemas. (mk)
