The movie, released last June and set in the north east Masurian lake district at the end of WW II, won 'Eagle' statuettes for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay (by Michał Szczerbic), Best Sound (Jacek Hamela and Katarzyna Dzida – Hamela), Best Supporting Actor (Jacek Braciak) and the Audience Award.

The 'Eagles' -the equivalent to the Polish academy awards - were a great personal success for 49 year-old director Wojtek Smarzowski, said Agnieszka Holland, whose Oscar nominated In Darkness picked up three awards last night.

“Wojtek Smarzowski is the great hope of Polish cinema. He is very talented and honest in what he does,” Holland said after her film picked up awards for Best Supporting Actress (Kinga Preis), Best Home Actor (Robert Więckiewicz) and Best Cinematography (Jolanta Dylewska).

Best European Film was won by the Oscar-winning King's Speech and Best Discovery of the Year was won by debut film maker Jan Komasa for Suicide Room. (pg)
