Close to forty companies that were hired as subcontractors in the construction of the National Stadium in Warsaw are threatening to blockade the arena, just days before the Euro 2012 begins on 8 June.

The firms are fighting for a resolution over outstanding payments for work carried out at the site.

According to the Rzeczpospolita daily, the National Sport Centre – a body set up in 2007 to oversee the construction of the stadium – estimates the claims at 10 million zloty (2.2 million euro).

However, the firms themselves told the paper that the sum is ten times higher.

“We have had enough of the exchange of correspondence with the general contractor and the investor, and the assurances that the money will be paid,” one of the subcontractors told the paper.

“If we don't get it by the beginning of the tournament, we're finished,” the employee claimed.
