A report published by Poland’s Labor Ministry says over 12 000 people joined the ranks of unemployed since July.

After slight decreases in June and July, the end of summer season seems to be taking its tool on the job market in Poland. The August figure stood at 12.4 percent and marked an increase of 12 thousand 600 persons compared to July, bringing the official total number of jobless to 1 million 965 thousand.

This has been the first hike in unemployment recorded in five months. Experts predict the trend may continue because seasonal jobs in such sectors as agriculture or construction will terminate and the number of people without temporary employment will increase as a result.

Research by Randstad labor market monitors indicates that only by one in four companies see possibilities for an increase in employment ranks in the coming months. Hopes for new employment are even lesser among small businesses.

The worst affected by the negative prospects are the Warminsko-Mazurskie and Podkarpackie regions of north-eastern and south-eastern Poland, respectively. (ss/be)
