Foreign fans spent over billion zloty during Euro 2012

Poland's Institute of Tourism has calculated that foreign football fans spent 1.376 billion zloty (331.5 million euro) in the country during Euro 2012.

According to the institute, 650,000 foreigners came to Poland in June specifically in connection with the football tournament (all in all 1.47 million tourists visited Poland that month).

About 275,000 foreigners came on a day-trip to Poland during the tournament, each spending an average of 354 zl (85 euro).

Meanwhile, about 285,000 fans spent one or more nights in Poland, spending an average of 1541 zloty (371 euro) per person.

A further 90,000 visitors were classed in the 'UEFA Family' category, taking in sponsors and members of the football association, spending a average of 3082 zloty (743 euro).

The institute estimates that prior to departure, fans spent on 223.7 million zloty (53.9 million zloty) on costs relating to their stay in Poland. (nh)
