Digital TV only in western Polish province as analogue switch off begins

TV viewers in the Lubusz province in western Poland became the first in the country today to be only able to watch terrestrial television digitally, after analogue transmitters were turned off.

Viewers will only able to watch terrestrial TV if they have a MPEG-4 decoder box after analogue signals stopped being sent from transmitters in Jemiołów, Zielona Góra and Zagan-Wichów, as part of Poland’s rolling programme of transferring to digital-only TV broadcasting.
“Thanks to this we can gain new opportunities at the interface between TV and the internet,” Poland’s minister for administration and digitalization Michal Boni said at a press conference, Wednesday.
On 28 November analog transmitters will be turned off in the northern Pomeranian province and in parts of north east Poland including the Warmia-Mazury region.
The first ever test transmission of TVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting — Terrestrial) technology was made by Poland’s national broadcaster TVP in Warsaw in 2001.
The Polish government announced in January 2009 that the digital broadcast switch-on would be made in three steps and the analog broadcast switch-off in six steps.
Poland will be entirely digital for terrestrial television broadcasting by summer 2013. (pg)
