Poland reiterates opposition to proposed UN internet regulation

Poland has repeated that it will not support new UN regulations on internet regulations at a 12-day international conference in Dubai.

"The Polish government does not support any changes to the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITR), which could lead to a restriction of freedom and openness on the Internet,” Michal Boni, Polish minister of administration and digitization said at a meeting of Polish delegates at the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), which runs will 14 December in the United Arab Emirates.

The conference – held behind closed doors – will hear calls from Russia, among others, are for the UN body to take over governance duties from the California-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a non-profit organization that oversees internet domain names.

But Poland is among countries who have declared that they will not sign up to the plan.

“Poland does not support the extension of the ITU’s mandate on issues related to Internet governance,” Minister Boni said. (pg)
