The pair of turbines, which reach some 210 metres above ground level, are due to begin turning later this month.

Grzegorz Bartol, a private investor from the nearby city of Poznan, hopes that the plant will generate enough power for 6000 homes, at a rate of 18,000 MW per hour.

Each mast weighs 324 tonnes, standing on foundations of over 1500 tonnes.

It is expected than the rotors will turn at over 300 km per hour.

Only one other turbine in the world had previously crossed the 200 metre mark, namely Germany's Fuhrlander Wind Turbine Laasow near Brandenburg, which stands at 205 metres.

However, the Polish erection has outdone that of its western neighbour by five metres. (nh)
