Jobless rate rises to 13.4 percent as economic slowdown bites

Poland unemployment rate in December rose to 13.4 percent, 0.5 percent more than November 2012, data released by the Central Statistical Office (GUS) has revealed.

Compared to the same time in December 2011, the jobless rate rose by 0.9 percent, with 2,136,000 registering at job centres.

The rise in unemployment was higher than expected, with Ministry of Labour and Social Policy predicting that 13.3 percent of the workforce would be without work last month..

In other indicators which point to an increasing slowdown in Poland’s economy, retail sales data for December fell by 2.5 percent, year-on-year. (pg)
