“We are back to square one,” building inspector Jaromir Grabowski said after an inspection of work on the runway, closed on 22 December last year causing holiday travel chaos for thousands of passengers, which still showed signs of cracks and flaking on the surface.

“Leaving the runway in such a state would require continuous maintenance, and it would be difficult to reconcile this with the safe operation of the airport,” said Grabowski.

“We're back to square one: that is, a situation in which there is an obligation to carry out an overhaul, involving putting on another top layer of the runway and it will not be used until it is repaired,” he added.

An analysis as to why the 2500 metre runway showed cracking and flaking on the surface - at the airport which opened to commercial traffic from low-cost airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair in the summer last year - will be published in two or three weeks.

Air traffic has been transferred to Warsaw's main Chopin airport at Okecie.

Piotr Okienczyc, CEO at Modlin airport, around 40 kilometres from the centre of Warsaw, says he expects the airport to reopen in “March or April”. (pg)
