The figures tally with an earlier estimate by the labour Ministry that the jobless rate rose sharply at the turn of the year.

According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS) 2,295,770 people registered at job centres in January.

In other data, retail sales rose by 3.1 percent, year-on-year, in January, which was higher than most analysts expected. (pg)
