The Polish oil company Grupa Lotus is interested in obtaining a shale gas exploration licence in Lithuania.

Lotos chief Pawel Olechnowicz is in the Lithaunian capital of Vilnius, Thursday, for talks with Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius on the issue and ahead of a Central Europe Energy Partners (CEEP) energy summit in the Baltic state in June.

Last November Grupa Lotos acquired the remaining 50 percent interest in the Lithuanian Manifoldas hydrocarbon explorer and producer.

It is estimated that Lithuania could have up to 60 billion cubic meters of shale gas reserves, or about 20 years' worth of gas at current rates of consumption.

In February it was announced that US oil giant Chevron had applied for a shale gas exploration licence.

Chevron will also be involved in shale gas exploration in Poland. (pg)
