Polish bus manufacturer Solaris Bus and Coach is preparing to export electric buses, with the first batches due to be sold to Germany and Austria this year.

The company, which is based near Poznan in western Poland, is currently fine-tuning its new Solaris Urbino 12 Electric model.

“We are pinning our hopes on a longer future with this vehicle,” Zbigniew Palenica, board member of Solaris told Poland's Newseria agency.

“Test drives are being carried out at the moment,” he confirmed.

Germany is already the company's biggest market outside Poland, and Solaris has supplied the country with about 2000 buses to date.

The first batch of electric buses will be sold to Brunswick, Lower Saxony, and to the Austrian city of Klagenfurt.

Electric buses currently cost twice the price of those that run on petrol. However, they are more eco-friendly, a factor which Solaris believes is key for the model's future. (nh)
